Dr No Effects

Dutch illustrator specializing custom lettering, Eric van der Boom was recently commissioned by the vintage-sound guitar pedal manufacturer Dr. No Effects to create a new logo, packaging and product styling for all their pedals.  The visual styles for each of the pedals pair amazing well with the rich tone and sounds (demo the sounds on the Dr. No site).

Other projects by Eric van der Boom worth checking out - Ray Ban Rare Prints, Baetulona, and Def P & Beatbusters.

RAY LEMON - Branding & Invitation Concept

To help launch the new restaurant and bar RAY LEMON, design studio LSDK created a suite of branding and invite elements.  The entire vibrant identity set feels both fresh and unique down to the origami invitations filled with spices and ingredients featured in their current menu.

In addition to the usual posts this week, I will be curating daily posts featuring projects recently posted to the creative network Behance.  You can follow along on my blog with the Behance tag.

Is Consumerism Killing Our Creativity?
How much time do you spend consuming knowledge, inspiration, or creative stimulation in a day?  This drive to consume comes at a price, and research shows that satisfaction found in the search and consuming process stimulates the brain in a similar manner as acting on real creative activity.
Are you getting your “creative rush” by simply searching and consuming, or are you creating which rewards you in the long term?

Making Ideas Happen
“Ideas are worthless if you can’t make them happen.”  The process of turning your ideas in reality takes organization, execution, communal forces, and leadership.  For several years I have been a part of the Behance community and followed the evolution of Behance lead by Scott Belsky from a product line, to a consultancy, creative network, productivity web application, thought leader, conference, and now a book.
I’ve had this book on pre-order since February and next week on April 15th the book will finally ship.  I’m anticipating this book to be one of the more valuable books I read this year; based on Behance’s other content and the reviews I’m sure it’ll live up to my anticipation.

Many of us believe that great ideas inevitably lead to success. Nothing could be further from the truth. Whether it is the perfect solution for an everyday problem or a bold new concept for a creative masterpiece, you must transform vision into reality for an idea to have value.
This book chronicles the methods of exceptionally productive creative leaders and teams – companies like Google, IDEO, and Disney, and individuals like author Chris Anderson and Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh – that make their ideas happen, time and time again.

Jill Greenberg: How Much Do You Push the Envelope?

The 99 Percent just published a segment of Jill Greenberg’s session from 2009 on pushing the envelope.

“What’s interesting about controversy is that it gets your pictures out there.” Photographer Jill Greenberg on the value of pushing the envelope.

Behance Action Journal
Over the years I have used all type of books, journals, and pads to take notes, stay organized, and plan.  Behance has created by far my favorite system for capturing actions, but before now my only complaint was the flimsy cover that took a beating rather quickly.  They just updated several of their products to give the journal a thick hard cover that looks comparable to a moleskin notebook.  The new journal comes in the action and dot-grid formats.  I just ordered both.

Fragments of the City
Digital artist and illustrator Evgeny Kiselev’s art has a fine balance of mathematical geometry and chaos.  Creating art for brands like Snikers, Miller, SanDisk, Billbord, and others, Evgeny has a massive portfolio full of unique work.

“The diverse work of Evgeny Kiselev oscillates between the rigors of symmetry and prolific excess. Several compositions begin with vivid tiled patterns that are mirrored again and again until they can no longer be contained and are forced to push beyond the confines of their logic. Others, emerge from a single outline that manifests the controlled lawlessness of the work. Each piece achieves a complexity of color and layer that continues to build infinitely into the space of the page creating a warping spatial depth.” - about Evgeny Kiselev
